In terms of furniture at the Imm Cologne, the retro style was all present.
The European 40-50s seem to be have a very special place with most customers. It is especially the simple shape language and the well-known muted retro colors, such as mustard-yellow, sea-green or blue. Just as often we also found the intense orange and petrol and greens from this era. In addition, we personally noticed the color blue in varying intensity. There were both blue sofa landscapes, as well as blue carpets, pillows and accessories – often combined with gold or copper accents or contrasting with mustard yellow or green. The living examples of the manufacturers showed either a clear contrast program with not only 2 contrasting colors or a coherent tone-in-tone compilation.
However, 1:1 copies of retro designs were not trending at Imm Cologne.
Of course, there were also examples but we primarily saw two different styles of the retro style. On the one hand, there were those manufacturers and designers, who left the retro designs in their original form andspiced them up with new fabrics, materials or design elements. On the other hand, there were mainly designers who presented a fresh interpretation of the earlier forms.
In addition to the retro style, we have also seen a trend towards functionality and individualization. This was especially the case with manufacturers of modern furniture. Cubic shapes that can be combined with almost any color and form were just as present as furniture with funny finesse.
The company Muuto had some ideas as with simple forms quite individual wall units can arise.
But the trend towards functionality and individuality is also clearly visible with the well-known children’s furniture manufacturers such as Paidi and Möbelfabrik Rudolf. Children’s room programs are set up in such a way that they can easily be converted into a youth room later on. In the office and living area, the shelves and cabinets are placed so that you can almost reach a built-in system to accommodate your folders and books. Even if the bulk goods from the furniture and mail-order industry convey the impression that high-gloss is the trend, we have found that the direction of modern furniture shapes is likely to be more small-format but expandable. So everyone can assemble the parts like with a modular system.
With upholstery manufacturers, the trend color for sofa landscapes and couches is gray.
For the older clientele much was shown in beige-brown tones. The basic colors are supplemented, for example with accessories in the trendy retro colors and with carpets, for example with the ethno style. The focus on functionality and individualization was expressed here by the fact that the armrests and backrests can be adjusted very flexibly and the set can be assembled from the (2-seater to the sofa landscape – depending on the space available.. With this, many people put a statement against cheap imports. The customer should recognize the added value and purchase valuable products which were then often manufactured in Europe and Germany.
But there was also a tendency towards functionality in the Pure Talents segment, where students and young designers presented themselves. There were side tables with light, stools with integrated lighting, a mirror connected with a dressing table which had only 2 legs and leaned against the wall and seating arrangements which can be changed individually.
These were the two great furniture highlights which have kept us busy at the Imm Cologne. In addition, we were also impressed by the companies which showed their interesting interpretations of the British style. The Chesterfield style sofas could be spotted at many stands. Whether classic: in heavy brown leather optics, funky: in violet with fabric cover, or even modern Chesterfield-style seating furniture.
Even if the industrial style seems to become less important, the stand of arteinmotion was a real eye-catcher at Imm Cologne.
“Used” is almost inevitable in industrial. And so we were amazed when we entered this stand. Objects from aviation and engine technology were turned into stylish furniture and accessories and this in no way “used” style, but rather modern in a chrome-gloss look. Very well done!
So far our impressions with regard to the possible furniture trends in 2016. We will give you even more impressions of the Imm Cologne. Carpets, wall coverings come next.
