How comfort has been applied to outdoor furniture at this year’s Imm Cologne.
We have seen so many great ideas for outdoor use that we would like to make a take on this. We immediately noticed the many “landscape-like” couch arrangements. “More is more” was the motto in the outdoor area. Larger dimensions were shown significantly more than compact furniture for the smaller wallet. Some exhibitors have focused on furniture that is both outdoor but also comfortable as a living room set. Pure teak or bamboo furniture was less present. The manufacturers wanted to show new ways and possibilities to make it comfortable outside.
Conmoto presented comfortable and ultra-flexible outdoor furniture.
The modules could be used universally as stools, room dividers and planters. Even the upholstery fabrics were at least water-repellent. The “Riva” furniture display clearly shows that these pieces of furniture could also be used inside. Even sunshade holders and side tables with integrated solar light were thought of here.
Other manufacturers scored with their color and material selection. We liked furniture in new wood colors like these with a skeletal structure and the very white glazed surface. We have also seen outdoor furniture with a real chill factor. Hanging mats, reinterpretations of Hollywood swings and rocking chairs which guarantee absolute relaxation in the home garden, were very often presented at the fair. In terms of color, the retro colors were just as present as classic gray-and-white models, accentuated with a trend color like Marsala.
Wood is still popular as an outdoor material but can be seen in combination with metal or plastic.
The Belgian designers of Extremis did just that in presenting tables with integrated benches, umbrellas and harmoniously coordinated LED lighting. With this compact concept and the generous amount of space available, they will surely be successful. The sturdy “Sticks” room dividers with integrated lighting, shield, but at the same time you can guess what is behind it and thereby loosen the atmosphere on the terrace. They can also be used for smaller spaces.
The designer Kenneth Cobonpue designs furniture for interior and outdoor using knotting and clamping techniques in combination with plastic strands and bast-like material wrapped cords. The processing technology reminded us of the very popular Henkel outdoor steel tube furniture which was very popular in Germany in the late 1970s. Nevertheless, Kenneth Cobonpue has potential in our eyes, because with its new forms in the outdoor area it sets new, quite comfortable accents.
The company RYL (Relax your your home) is paying attention to a completely different material. As a provider of wellness furniture, they showed how high-quality plastic can be used for modern outdoor furniture. However the simple shape language, the modern design and the partial piano lacquer surfaces by no means looked comfortable. But when we were asked to sit down, we were actually quite suprised: it was incredibly comfortable! And when you got up, the furniture immediately morphed back into its original form. It looked as if no one had ever sat there.
All the furniture can be used inside as well as outside.
They can be wiped off, are easy to maintain and are available in many different color variants e.g. apple green, turquoise, as well as classics such as white, gray, black or red. Even matt surfaces and softer colors could be seen on the exhibition area. Some scored with various adjustment possibilities and modular technology which can be put together individually.
