Carpets with more character make their way into the rooms and the ethno trend trumps with new colors and patterns.
There were some developments in the carpet and floor coverings but also the 3D trend already described in our previous article was clearly present at Imm Cologne. There were companies like Imprilana which now categorize the carpets in “design worlds” such as “Modern Classic”, “New Country” or “Simply Elegant”, making it easier for the customer to find a carpet for the individual style of living. As the carpets are now becoming more colorful, more patterned and more visual, this seems appropriate. Simply placing a plain carpet in your home is out. Courage to the extraordinary!
We particularly like the increased presence of picture motifs with some artistic style. The dusty image of the carpet as pure “foot warmers” and “silencers” is out. According to some manufacturers the carpet will reflect the personal style of the owner in the future and will be used as an eye-catcher for the room. This is a nice development, because this way the floor becomes a wall and some exhibitors have very impressive carpets and wall-to-wall carpets.
With the classic carpets from India and Western Asia, we could clearly see a strong “used” effect.
However, we don’t think that makes much sense. For those who buy such a (mostly) very expensive carpet, it should be much more affordable to just get an original worn out object at a market, newspaper ad or on the internet. Since the used effect then came natural over the years and not unnaturally regular as with many carpets at the fair.
The ethno trend can still be seen. However, rather in the typically strong colors of red, blue, green, yellow-contrast with natural white and of course the known patterns of Middle and South America, as well as India. At the Ambiente fair in 2015 there were more pastel tones. Sustainability and an ecological background also played an important role for many exhibitors.
The company Organoid had both floor coverings and straw wallpapers in its portfolio. Many interesting optics were available and everything was quite natural. Both in the production and in the appearance of the material. There you could see wallpaper with wild flower blossoms and rose petals.
Wallpapers and innovative and unusual wall designs were also strongly represented at Imm Cologne. But we’ll save that for our next article!
