Light bulb variants compared
We show you what sets all the light bulbs apart.

Who can’t relate to that. You stand in front of the bulbs shelf and have no idea what bulb is required for this lamp. Decisive for the right choice is primarily the lamp base, which is screwed or just plugged in. We’ll show you the most common lamp bases and their characteristics in detail.

E14 lamp

wb_incandescent

Available shapes

Candle shape, tubular shape, fridge bulb, oven bulb, drop shape, mini globe, gust candle, reflector, deco pipe, halogen bulb

battery_charging_full

Available technologies

Old light bulb technology banned since 2012, halogen technology until 2016 still allowed but must become more efficient and at least efficiency class “B” respectively; otherwise there are still energy saying or LED technology.

texture

Available finishes

Clear (matt, opal, ice crystal, amber, gold and other surfaces are available only as a seperate item. Meaning the halogen lamp is being sold as a base set and the various decorative glasses can be bought seperately. The energy efficiency class of the base with the halogen bulbs is in line with EU standards. Therefore it’s allowed.)

Connection

The connection is made directly via the existing 230V power supply.

report

Common problems

Energy Saving and LED versions sometimes have other dimensions than the original bulb technology. This means in open lamps such as pendant lights the more efficient bulbs will not look good in some situations. So check prior your purchase: how far will the bulb stay out of the lamp? And the alternatives are often not dimmable. If that’s important to you check on the halogen variants.

G4 lamp

wb_incandescent

Available shapes

Pin base and special shapes

battery_charging_full

Available technologies

Original halogen technology, as well as LED alternatives

texture

Available finishes

Clear (matt, gold and rose no longer available)

Connection

Low-voltage lamps have to be operated via a transformer (so-called ballast).

report

Common problems

LED versions are very compact but they often lack the same performance as the original low-voltage halogen version. This means in case of a repurchase it must be ensured that an LED version achieves the same brightness. Also you should consider with low-voltage lamps whether the built-in transformer has sufficient capacity. This is often not the case with the highly efficient LED bulbs anymore.

GY6,35 lamp

GU4 lamp

wb_incandescent

Available shapes

Pin base with reflector

battery_charging_full

Available technologies

Original halogen technology, as well as LED versions

texture

Available finishes

The reflector may have different interior and exterior surfaces to restrain heat or to set certain accents, e. g. gold or colored

Connection

Low-voltage lamps have to be operated via a transformer (so-called ballast).

GU10 lamp

wb_incandescent

Available shapes

High-voltage reflector with slightly beveled bayonet socket

battery_charging_full

Available technologies

Original halogen technology, as well as energy-saving and LED alternatives

texture

Available finishes

The reflector may have different interior and exterior surfaces to restrain heat or to set certain accents, e.g. gold or colored

Connection

The connection is made directly via the existing 230V power supply.

report

Common problems

Energy saving and LED versions are available however the LED versions have the comparable dimensions to the original original HV halogen lamps. On the other hand the luminous efficiency can very often be worse.

GZ10 lamp

wb_incandescent

Available shapes

High-voltage reflector similar to the GU10 base with bayonet

battery_charging_full

Available technologies

Halogen

texture

Available finishes

Silver, satin, different outer surfaces

Connection

The connection is made directly via the existing 230V power supply.

report

Common problems

It is very difficult to get alternatives to LED or energy-saving technology however the GU10 lamps with their slightly slanted base also fit in the GZ-version.

G9 lamp

wb_incandescent

Available shapes

High-voltage pin base

battery_charging_full

Available technologies

Halogen, energy-saving, LED

texture

Available finishes

Clear (satin banned since 2009)

Connection

The connection is made directly via the existing 230V power supply.

report

Common problems

Energy saving and LED versions have other dimensions than the original high-voltage halogen technology. This means in narrow glasses or vertical spotlights the more efficient bulbs will not look good under circumstances or are not approved for vertical installation. This should be considered when you replace it.

R7S lamp

wb_incandescent

Available shapes

Halogen rod standardized lengths 78mm and 117mm

battery_charging_full

R7s bulbs are available with the original halogen technology, energy-saving and LED technology.

texture

Available finishes

Clear (satin banned since 2009)

Connection

The connection is made directly via the existing 230V power supply.

report

Common problems

Energy saving and LED versions are available however all in other designs and dimensions to the original R7s.
