Domotex in Hanover, Imm Cologne, Heimtextil in Frankfurt, Maison & Objet in Paris and Ambiente in Frankfurt are all over. Each show had its own special focus, giving us a broad insight into the upcoming interior trends for 2019-2020, as well as trends in the accessories and boutique industries.
If you haven’t been able to attend these events, here is a brief summary and our conclusion on what could emerge as an interior trend from the respective international events.
First, let’s take a look at Domotex, which sees itself as the world’s leading trade fair for flooring manufacturers and retailers.
It’s a trade fair and therefore focuses on craftsmen and buyers for flooring, carpet dealers, interior decorators, designers and architects. The fair also covers new developments in manufacturing. Like many trade fairs, Domotex has had a special area for extraordinary production processes of innovative products for two years now – usually made by designers or artists.
This year, the theme of this German fair was “Create’n’Connect” – which involved creative networking of both the different types of flooring materials, as well as different processing methods, and the networking of customers and manufacturers. Individualisation and digitization were a big focus at this event.
Sustainability in production and longevity also played a significant role for many manufacturers. For us one of the interior trends for 2019-2020 this fair: floor coverings with depth effect, e. g. with high-low optics in carpets, or laminate with very realistic tile printings.
For further research on upcoming trends, we visited Heimtextil.
Heimtextil fair is also a big melting pot for trade visitors and manufacturers from all over the world. It is one of our most interesting interior design fairs in 2019. Here, as the name implies, home textiles play the main role. More than 3,000 exhibitors presented the visitor novelties in terms of curtains, fabrics for upholstery, pillows, plaids, bed linen, mattresses, towels, but also wallpaper and fabric floor coverings, such as carpets.
There’s also a platform for design developers, hospitality projects and printing providers. The theme in 2019 was “Mad about Textiles”. The special area “Trend Space” in hall 3 presented this year’s color and fabric trends in different theme worlds. One of the interior trends for 2019-2020 that we took home with us was the fact that velvet on upholstered furniture is still in high demand. There are two major trends in wallpapers – one of which is metallic effects. The other big trend is wallpaper with large floral patterns which sometimes seem like oversized pictures. In old buildings and vintage ambience a real highlight.
Next, Imm Cologne was on the calendar as a major interior trade fair.
It attracted 150,000 trade visitors this year and is also the only trade fair in this article with visitor days for end consumers. National and international furniture manufacturers and retailers present themselves at Imm Cologne. But there was also space for other furnishing themes, such as kitchens, sleeping, light, home textiles, wallpaper, pictures and decorative accessories. On the special areas smaller start-ups and designers showed their projects – for example the “Young Talents” area. Also, the history of the “Bauhaus” (100 years) was dedicated to a special area in the passages.
Our résumé here (also in comparison to Maison & Objet in Paris) was that the exhibitors and buyers in Cologne were not as daring and experimental as, for example, the exhibitors in Paris.
At Imm Cologne 2019 it were subtle colors such as beige, wool white and shades of gray that continued to set the tone for exhibitors – even though we occasionally saw bright colors on couches, such as emerald green, apricot or a midnight blue.
The Maison & Objet in Paris, on the other hand, was an interior fair for lovers of the extravagant and the bold colors in Art Déco style.
In eight large halls, manufacturers and retailers presented furniture of all kinds for indoors and outdoors, lighting designs, wall coverings, tiles, home textiles, decorative accessories, jewelry to fashion accessories and sculptures. This offered over 84,200 trade visitors a comprehensive insight into the Western European furniture and interior market for five days straight.
Separating in “Maison” and “Objet” further facilitates a targeted trade fair visit. There also were trend areas, such as “Rising Talents”: this time, six Chinese designers were invited to present their creations. Or the trend forum for the exhibition’s main theme: “Excuse my French“. It was the ideal setting for unmistakable French art, showing paradoxes and classics twisted.
This confirmed the image of the unconventional, lively and eclectic French market with its historical roots and its urge for new technologies and the connection of these elements. The “What’s New” areas displayed more than 500 brands and almost 1,500 products in a compact space. From the style offices of Elizabeth Leriche, François Bernard and François Delclaux, the big interior trends for 2019-2020 could be captured very quickly.
An interior trend we spotted at Maison & Objet in Paris is the tendency towards a “new” old furniture style: Art Déco. Bold colors on modern upholstered furniture, opulent lighting and decorations with lots of golden or black-chrome accents create a historic and welcoming atmosphere. Combined with some modern style elements, this creates a unique ambience.
In Paris we also finally realized that the animal of the 2019 interior year is a monkey. Even though the flamingo is still present in outdoor furniture manufacturers and more exotic scenarios of some decor makers and dealers.

The Ambiente in Frankfurt is the last interior fair in our series.
From the boutique, jewelery and furniture industry, it presented mostly tableware, small furniture, fashion accessories, home textiles and decorative accessories to the trade visitor. Also useful and smart design objects for everyday life, as well as ideas for the retailer to build more interest on the point-of-sale, were the focus of this fair. Again, there were areas for trends, for young designers and suppliers of sustainable products and concepts. Every year, Ambiente has a partner country, from which start-ups, trending designers and product ideas are presented. This time it was the Indian design culture they picked.
In a special presentation, designer Ayush Kasliwal showed how important craftsmanship in India still is today. Sandeep Sangaru on the other hand, designed a café with Indian flair in hall 4.1 as a meeting place for visitors to relax and kick back. In addition, hall 9 presented handmade Indian products and their production in an interactive environment. All in all, the Ambiente was a colorful mix of various interior products which offered a diverse selection of impressions for the trade visitors.
One of the interior trends for 2019-2020 that caught our eye here is the trend of table ware going back to more standardized shapes, or less hand-made style. But slight abnormal geometric shapes and structured or ribbed dishes, e. g. provided with optical or haptic grooves. Intensive colors in dinnerware, such as earth tones or water colors are still present.
You see, depending on which fairs you visit, the picture is different and only the impressions of all then solidify the few main styles and furnishing trends that will established themselves in 2019 and 2020.
Yes, there are always several trends and we took home a lot of inspirations from every fair.
